Records and trends
Compare Chelsea's title-winning teams, promotion campaigns, scoring peaks and strongest defensive seasons across more than a century.
Six champions, six different teams
Chelsea's six top-flight championships span two-points and three-points eras, different programme lengths and very different scoring environments.
The 2004–05 side conceded only fifteen league goals; 2009–10 scored 103; and 2016–17 won thirty matches. Each reached first place through a different balance.
Promotions that changed the club's direction
The 1983–84 Second Division championship stands out because it followed a narrow escape from the third tier. John Neal's rebuilt side scored ninety league goals and returned Chelsea to the top flight in one season.
The jump from tenth in 2015–16 to champions in 2016–17 was a different kind of recovery: Antonio Conte transformed a top-flight side without the interruption of relegation.
Scoring and defensive peaks
League totals reflect different numbers of matches, so per-game rates help place the headline figures in context. They also reveal how unusual the fifteen goals conceded in 2004–05 and 103 scored in 2009–10 remain.
