Chelsea's FA Cup victory ended a twenty-six-year wait for a major trophy. The campaign joined players developed in England with increasingly prominent international recruits, making the final both an ending and a beginning.
Roberto Di Matteo scored inside the opening minute against Middlesbrough, and Eddie Newton completed the 2-0 victory late in the match. The two goals also represented the squad's mixture: a new overseas signing and a player developed through Chelsea's youth system.
