FA Cup success sent Chelsea into the European Cup Winners' Cup, and the club won the competition at the first attempt. The achievement extended the previous season's domestic breakthrough into a first European honour.
Real Madrid and Chelsea drew the first final in Athens, so the trophy was settled by a replay at the same ground two days later. Chelsea won 2-1 through goals by John Dempsey and Peter Osgood.
The sixth-place league finish was respectable rather than dominant, and the domestic cups ended in the fourth round. Keeping those outcomes beside the European victory prevents the season being rewritten as unbroken success.
